National Cybersecurity Awareness Month

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about cybersecurity threats and best practices to protect ourselves online. Hughes—an MSSP—is posting educational material and insights all month long to help enterprises become more aware of modern threats and how recent advancements in cybersecurity have developed to protect your network.

What's Happening in the World of Cybersecurity?

  • Ransomware: Ransomware attacks continue to be a major concern. The average cost of data breach in 2024 reached $4.88 million. An amount that is capable of shuttering small to medium- sized businesses and staggering even large enterprises. This amount typically includes a ransom payment, but also includes costs such as the loss of consumer trust, lawsuits, and possible fines from government regulators due to lack of compliance.
  • AI-Powered Threats: The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence is also leading to new cybersecurity challenges. Malicious actors are leveraging AI to automate attacks, making them more numerous, harder to detect, and easier for cybercriminals to execute.
  • Phishing Attacks: Phishing remains a common and effective attack method. Despite ongoing efforts to educate users, social engineering tactics continue to be successful in tricking individuals into clicking on malicious links or downloading malware.
  • Zero-Day Threats: Zero-days are still one of the most common ways businesses are breached today, being responsible for an estimated 53% of mass compromise events in 2023. Businesses need to defend themselves from zero-day threats, but most traditional tools on the market are reactive, instead of proactive, leaving many businesses with gaps in their defenses.
